Fellas,
Simply put, the term "JAIL DOOR CAR" refers to the method of chassis construction for slot cars "back in the day". While many kids were busy assembling and running their RTR (ready to run) slot cars or even building one of the many slot car kits on the market a select few had delved into the "scratch built" realm of the hobby.
For those that remember the era of the old model car magazines, cars of this type were actually quite common in the 1960's. In fact in 1966 ROD & CUSTOM Magazine saw fit to developed a set of national rules that eventually cumulated in a National event staged under those particular rules.
In the mid 2000's several nationally recognized racers from the glory days saw fit to get together and relying partiatlly on these same R&C rules, organized a racing series that used these rules and car styles as one of the classes. Having been in and out of the slot car racing hobby since the mid 1970's and having been a slot car buff since I can recall reading about them in the magazines of the day, I felt as though I had to share some photos of recent racing events that have been held with "JAIL DOOR CARS"... The upper photo shows the starting field for the Gran Prix portion of the event. The second photo show the Sports Car event awaiting the green. This event was held at THE RACE PLACE in Farmingdale N.J. not long ago Attachments:

Some more pics: "Jail Door" chassis photos show the scratch built chassis, the most intricate part of the cars... Upper photo shows a GRAN PRIX chassis built by the well known chassis builder/slot car racer Tony "P".
The wider chassis, a Sports Car style as built by Mike Katz, who is a well known New York builder and slot car racer. Click the pics... Attachments:

This last group of pictures feature my Gran Prix cars (2) and the Sports Car that if all goes well will debut at this Saturday's "JAIL DOOR Races" to be held at Dom's Raceway in Cream Ridge NJ. My Ferrari #3 is seen on the right and the Green Lotus #5 is also my car.
The last photo shows what my Sports Car started out as. Click the pics...
